What is a Dermal Filler & How do they work

Dermal fillers are injectable compounds that plump the skin, fill wrinkles and lines. They help correct sunken scars and rejuvenate the skin. Dermal fillers make an excellent choice for individuals who wish to look younger and smoother and want to dodge the cost and recovery time of surgery.

The cause of wrinkles skin

Dermal fillers are used to rectify skin conditions associated with aging and enhancing the lips. The process of aging causes the skin to lose some of its components including collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin. Collagens support the protein in the skin while hyaluronic acid traps water increasing the volume and shape of the skin. Elastin helps sustain the firmness of the skin and slows the formation of wrinkles. Loss of these components causes aging skin conditions. The dermal fillers help reverse the conditions.

Types of dermal fillers

There are several kinds of dermal fillers each constituting of different ingredients. The fillers have a duration of effectiveness after which the patient needs to get retreated. The most common types are hyaluronic acid, fat, and collagen. They can last between six and twelve months. Others include Calcium hydroxylapatite and Polymethylmethacrylate beads. Polymethylmethacrylate beads are permanent and non-biodegradable as opposed to other kinds.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the human eyes and connective tissues. When used as dermal filler, hyaluronic acid works like a cushion that fills the skin tissues while at the same time draws water to the skin. The substance can be applied to replace lost fat from the cheek that makes individuals appear bony and tired. It fills wrinkles, lines and folds giving a vibrant and youthful face.

The surgeon uses the body’s endogenous fat. The doctor draws fat from other areas of the body such as the thighs and abdomen. The fat undergoes purification before being injected into target areas of the face. Because the fat is analogous to the body, it eliminates the risk of allergic reaction. The body hardly reacts to its own tissue, and it is thus an excellent option for individuals that react to other compounds such as hyaluronic acid.

The body naturally reabsorbs some of the injected fat. To cater for this, the doctor will initially inject excess amounts into the face. The visage will thus appear swollen for the initial days until the body absorbs extra fat.

The human skin and cow products contain collagen protein. The dermal process of using collagen is commonly employed to plump the lips. It can be applied to eliminate the appearance of mild and moderate creases in the facial skin. It is widely used in patients who wish to improve their appearance after a facelift or plastic surgery. Individuals who want to use bovine collagen need to undertake some pre-allergic tests to ensure the product is safe for them.

Calcium hydroxylapatite

Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral similar to that found in the human bones and teeth. The compound is used for wrinkles in the face and arms. Calcium hydroxylapatite is formulated into a gel-like solution which is injected under the skin in the back of the hand or into the facial wrinkles. The solution can last for around eighteen months. The disadvantage of this substance is that it is detectable by X-ray imaging and may obscure underlying tissue.

Polymethylmethacrylate beads

Polymethylmethacrylate beads is a synthetic compound that is biocompatible. The body does not absorb it making it permanent. The small bead is suspended in a gel-like solution containing bovine collagen to formulate the dermal filler. The solution is then injected into the target areas of the face.
